The Burren

During our tour of the Burren yesterday I came to understand why the Celtic people maintained religious beliefs that were so deeply entwined with their surroundings. The Irish landscape is inspiring and vibrant. In just a few short miles you can see many different sights, including some of the most lush forests I've ever seen. The land leaves a lasting impression of its age when you look across it. Perhaps its the limestone in the hills that makes the land so timeless. Whatever the case, I was captivated during the entire bus ride.

The most unforgettable part of the tour was our stop at the Cliffs of Moher. The tour guide stated that the cliffs were 650 feet tall. While the mathematical figure sounds impressive, it fails dismally to convey the beauty and expanse of the cliffs. The cliffs extend for what seems like a mile to the south west, slowly dissipating and eventually wrapping around a small jut, leaving nothing but the Atlantic ocean ahead of you. The view gave me the sensation that I was standing at the edge of the world, and in many ways I was. However, if you look to the North you can see all three of the Aran islands as well as the rest of Galway Bay. Seeings the cliffs was the most worthwhile thing I've done so far on the trip.
